Getting There:

American Airlines flies directly to Beef Island, Tortola airport (EIS) from Dallas, Fort Worth (DFW). The phone number and web links for AA and car rental companies are available at this magazine's Airlines and Autos pages.

Staying There:

If you book a charter boat with Moorings, land transportation from the airport to the hotel or marina is included. For land/sea crewed charters, the hotel is also included in the price of the package (3 nights, utilized before and/or after the cruise at traveler's option). Moorings utilizes one of two hotels close to their marina. For the land segment, breakfasts are included, with guests responsible for lunch and dinner. A broad variety of restaurants are nearby. Taxis are plentiful and car rentals are available by the day. Moorings customers also receive a British Virgin Islands sail cruising guide book before their departure. For travelers opting to book their own lodging, their are a broad variety of hotels and resorts on Tortola. A useful Caribbean reference providing a good BVI treatment is Frommer's Caribbean. When visiting the BVI, consider a side trip to St John in the USVI. A national park covers most of the island, and the lifestyle is laid-back and relaxing. Villas can be affordable options for St John rentals USVI and are located all over the island.

Cruising:

Moorings crewed charters embark after breakfast from the Moorings marina, Road Town, Tortola. They return to the marina and debark just before lunch several days later, depending upon the specific charter. All drinks, meals, and sporting equipment usage are included in the price of the crewed charters. Pack light, as the temperatures range from 70 degrees F. at night to 85 degrees F. during the day. Bring a light jacket for higher wind days, and plenty of sunscreen. Take your own snorkeling gear if you have it. Otherwise, the boat has a good selection.
